**Cigar Storage Guide

Every cigar aficionado has their own collection, and everyone has their own methods for storing and preserving cigars. From classic wooden humidors to plastic containers like cigar boxes and airtight cases, the options are diverse.  

Similarly, how to store and preserve cigars is a matter of personal preference, so find a method that suits you.  

The best way to store and preserve cigars is to follow a few simple rules. First, choose where to keep your cigars. At À La Casa Del Habano, we prefer classic wooden humidors because the Spanish cedar used in premium humidors enhances the cigars' character. That said, we also use an acrylic humidor and specialized tobacco humidification bags for cigar preservation. Each style has its pros and cons.  

Wooden Humidors

Wooden humidors are ideal for preserving cigars. Premium wooden humidors are lined with white Spanish cedar, which imparts the wood's characteristics to your cigars. This technique has been used for years in large aging rooms by major cigar companies. However, wooden humidors have one drawback: you need a well-sealed lid to prevent humidity loss. Most premium humidors are tested before sale, but it's wise to check the seal yourself.  

Many still use the old-fashioned "dollar bill test": partially open the lid and slide a dollar bill through the gap. If the seal is tight, the bill won't move. Regularly check the seal, as wood can warp or dry over time, altering the lid's fit.  

Non-Wood Humidors

The lower price tag often indicates these are not premium products. Non-wood humidors use composite materials instead of solid wood. You can still find excellent options, but testing multiple units may be necessary to ensure proper humidity retention.  

These humidors are great for displaying cigars due to frequent opening and closing. Note that they are prone to warping and swelling.  

Plastic or Acrylic Containers  

Designed to keep Spanish cedar away from cigars, these allow natural aging. Many of our acquaintances use plastic containers as humidors with success, but ensure they are food-grade.  

Sealed Storage Bags

If the bags are cigar-specific and airtight, they work well. Some cigar bags include humidification devices available at tobacco shops. Many use these bags for their compact size and high capacity.  

Travel Humidors

Suitable for short-term use but not long-term storage. Many opt for large plastic travel cases, but even tightly closed ones may allow air exchange over time. Travel plastic humidors are the best choice—durable, crush-resistant, often lined with foam for protection, and sufficiently airtight to preserve cigars for 2-3 weeks.
